Investing beyond Gold: Silver ETF Investment Guide

Indian investors have traditionally made investments in gold as their safe haven asset. However, as the financial landscape matures, another precious metal is grabbing the limelight, i.e., Silver. In recent years, in addition to the traditional physical buying of silver, financial instruments such as Silver Exchange Traded Funds (ETFs) have become popular options among investors seeking exposure to the price action of silver without having to physically own it.

In this blog, we will explore the reasons driving investors to invest in Silver ETFs.

What are Silver ETFs?

Silver ETFs are exchange-traded funds that invest in physical silver and attempt to track the market performance of silver metal without the investor having to physically own the metal itself. Investors can buy and sell these ETFs on stock exchanges the same way that they would buy and sell shares. One of the most common Silver ETFs is SilverBees.

Silver ETFs enable investors to gain exposure to the price movement of silver from their trading and Demat accounts without the hassle of holding physical forms of precious metal, eliminating the concerns of storage, security and verifying the authenticity of the Silver metal.

Why consider investing in Silver ETFs?

Silver, sometimes called poor man’s gold, has many similarities with its yellow cousin, serving as a store of value and hedge against inflation. However, it also has a strong industrial demand, which brings in another aspect to the silver investment attraction.

Diversification and hedge against inflation

Silver also provides diversification value to an investment portfolio and is a hedge against currency depreciation and inflation. This helps investors to spread their overall risk by investing in different asset classes.

Industrial demand and green technologies

One of the biggest differentiators for silver is its widespread industrial use. Silver plays an important role in a variety of new age and green technologies, including solar, electric vehicles and electronics. As these sectors continue to grow, there is likely to be a higher demand for silver, which can prove to be beneficial for Silver ETF investors.

Accessibility and cost-effectiveness

Silver ETFs provide a low-cost and digital investment option that can be used to gain exposure to silver.  They eliminate the complexities and additional expenses associated with buying physical silver, including storage costs, insurance costs and purity concerns.

For example, HDFC Silver ETF can be a cost-effective and convenient way to invest in silver, and it offers investors an opportunity to buy and sell its units on the stock exchange in the same way as stocks.

Tax efficiency

Investing in Silver ETFs also has significant tax benefits over physical silver. Under the current taxation structure in India, Silver ETF units with holding periods over 12 months qualify for Long-Term Capital Gains (LTCG) and are taxed at a favourable rate of 12.5%. This tax structure enables investors to maximise their post-tax returns, avoiding the 3% GST and arbitrary making charges incurred on buying physical silver, which significantly reduces the initial value of physical silver purchases.

Price transparency and small unit investment

The prices of silver ETFs on the exchanges are transparent and consistent across all the platforms, like shares and other tradable securities. Furthermore, investors can buy even 1 unit of a silver ETF, therefore start to invest in Silver without putting a lot of pressure on their wallet.

The bottom line

Silver ETFs offer a modern, regulated and accessible means of investment for Indian investors without any logistical complications associated with physical silver. Silver ETFs provide liquidity, ease of access and diversification opportunities, making them a desirable investment option for investors looking to diversify their investment portfolio outside of gold.
